  When my wife was in the hospital for a week, I sent a box of home-made cdnaies, brownies, and fudge along with a thank you. I also made a donation in each of her nurses name to a charity that they support (I got to know each of them very well since I was there 18 hours a day).I did my candy etc, to the entire station since everyone helped out to some degree with my wifes care.   Thank you so much for sharing your story. I have read a lot of anaiml (pet) blogs and yours really touched my heart!
